Died on: Monday, 23rd September 1940

Died at: 46 Albion Street, Hastings

Additional Information: Robert Winborn, aged 42, died when an lone bomber dropped 3 high explosive bombs and one oil incendiary bomb on Albion Street, Halton, Valley Side Road and the High Street, Old Town. His wife, Louisa Annie Winborn was also killed in the attack.

Robert’s surname is spelt ‘Wimborne’ on Hastings War Memorial, but I have kept to the spelling shown on the grave marker.

Died on: Thursday, 12th September 1940

Died at: 41 Alfred Road, Clive Vale, Hastings

Additional Information: William Dowding, aged 59, died when an unknown number of bombers dropped 150 incendiaries on Clive Vale, including on Alfred Road and Edmund Road. He was the husband of Mrs J Dowding. One other person was killed in the raid.

William Dowding and Jane Bumstead, his aunt who was killed in the same raid, are remembered on the same grave located in Hastings Cemetery in area BD D09.

Name: Florence Elizabeth Cornwall

Died on: Tuesday, 10th September 1940

Died at: Buchanan Hospital, but likely injured near to her home at 35 St Peters Road, St Leonards

Additional Information: Florence Cornwall, aged 51, died when a lone bomber dropped 10 high explosive bombs, and 40 incendiaries on Hollington Park, The Green, Sedlescombe Road South, Tower Road West, St Peter’s Road, Cloudsley Road, Woodland Vale Road and Christ Church School. One other person was killed, and there were other injuries, number unknown.

The information provided by CWGC states that Florence was the daughter of J A Cornwall.

I was unable to locate Florence’s grave marker in the main area of WW2 war graves, so she is likely buried else where on site. I will look to find it when I revisit Hastings Cemetery.

Additional Information: Maggie, aged 53, died when multiple bombers dropped 10 high explosive bombs on Harley Shute, Maze Hill and Saxon Street. Two others were injured, one seriously.

The information provided by CWGC states that Maggie was married to Robert Henry Russell Wright.

I missed Caroline’s grave marker when I visited Hastings Cemetery, so will provide a photograph of it after I go there again.

Additional Information: James Harmer died when a lone bomber dropped 6 high explosive bombs on Bexleigh Avenue, Pine Avenue and West St Leonards. One other person was killed, and another two injured, one seriously.

The information provided by CWGC states that James was the son of George James Thomas and Jean Frances Harmer and married to Florence Harmer. A member of the Home Guard, he died aged 41.

Additional Information: Caroline Felton died when a lone bomber dropped 6 high explosive bombs on Bexleigh Avenue, Pine Avenue and West St Leonards. One other person was killed, and another two injured, one seriously.

The information provided by CWGC states that Caroline, who was the widow of Alfred James Fenton, died aged 77 later that day at the Buchanan Hospital.

I missed Caroline’s grave marker when I visited Hastings Cemetery, so will provide a photograph of it after I go there again. She does not seem to be named on Hastings War Memorial.

Gooday, Violet Gladys

Name: Violet Gladys Gooday

Died on: Friday, July 26th 1940

Died at: 139 Priory Road, Hastings

Additional Information: Violet Gooday was the first person killed in Hastings as a result of the bombing raids. A lone bomber dropped 11 high explosive bombs on Gladstone Terrace, Whitefriars Road, Bembrook Road, Priory Road and the Cricket Ground. Nine other people were wounded, two seriously.

The information provided by CWGC states that Violet died aged 34 at the Municipal Hospital. She was married to Mr R Gooday.

I missed Violet’s grave marker when I visited Hastings Cemetery, so will provide a photograph of it after I go there again.
