Name: Florence Annie Mayer
Wounded on: Thursday, 24th September 1942
Wounded at: 61 Warrior Square, St Leonards
Additional Information: Florence Mayer, aged 70, was killed when seven fighter bombers swept into St Leonards strafing with machine gun fire and dropping HE bombs on Warrior Square, West Hill, St Leonards, Quarry Hill and De Cham Road. 23 people were killed in the attack, with 43 other wounded, 21 seriously.
Florence was the widow of Alfred John Mayer. Her name is spelt ‘Mayor’ on the CWGC records, however the gravestone and inscription on Hastings War Memorial have the spelling as ‘Mayer’. The date of death on the grave stone also differs to the date stated on CWGC records, so it is possible she died of wounds on 3rd October 1942.
