Name: Edith Ada Wilmshurst

Wounded on: Saturday 17th October 1942

Wounded at: 43 Pevensey Road, St Leonards

Additional Information: Edith Wilmshurst, aged 65, was wounded when two Fokker Wulf 109s dropped HE bombs on St Columbia’s Church, Warrior Gardens and Pevensey Road. She died on 18th October 1942 at the Buchanan Hospital. One other person was killed in the attack, with 16 others injured, 8 seriously.

Edith was married to Frederick Wilmshurst. She lived at 21 Eversfield Mews, Western Road, St Leonards

I was unable to locate Edith’s grave marker in the main area of WW2 war graves, so she is likely buried else where on site. I will look to find it when I revisit Hastings Cemetery.

Died at: 9 Grosvenor Gardens, St Leonards

Additional Information: Margaret Redhead, aged 77, was killed when seven fighter bombers swept into St Leonards strafing with machine gun fire and dropping HE bombs on Warrior Square, West Hill, St Leonards, Quarry Hill and De Cham Road. 23 people were killed in the attack, with 43 other wounded, 21 seriously.

The bomb site location map used as a reference doesn’t show a bomb hitting near to Grosvenor Gardens, so she may have been killed by machine gun fire.

Margaret was the daughter of Revd Theodore John and Helen Crane Redhead of Thurnby-cum-Stoughton, Leicester. She lived at Forewood Lodge, Crowhurst.

I was unable to locate Margaret’s grave marker in the main area of WW2 war graves, so she is likely buried else where on site. I will look to find it when I revisit Hastings Cemetery.

She died later that day at the Royal East Sussex Hospital. 23 people were killed in the attack, with 43 other wounded, 21 seriously.

Maud lived at 45 West Hill, St Leonards.

I was unable to locate Maud’s grave marker in the main area of WW2 war graves, so she is likely buried else where on site. I will look to find it when I revisit Hastings Cemetery.

Maud is not named on Hastings War Memorial.

Charlotte was the widow of Harry Vaughan Chapman. She lived at 71 Warrior Square.

Jessie was the daughter of Thomas Jesse and Eliza Elizabeth Burgess. She lived at 15a Warrior Square Mews.

Alice was the daughter of George Poole. The date of death on the grave stone also differs to the date stated on CWGC records, so it is possible she died of wounds on 3rd October 1942.
