60 St Georges Road, Hastings

On Sunday 17th May 1942 four Messerschmitt 109s did a ‘tip and run’ raid run on Hastings. The attackers fired their machine guns indiscriminately as they swept across town, dropped their bombs and then fled back to their base across the Channel. The four high explosive bombs dropped that day hit Falaise Road, Havelock Road and Middle Street. At Havelock Road house numbers 40 to 44 were damaged so badly they had to be demolished.

Constance Torrance, aged 28 was killed in her home by machine gun fire at 60 St Georges Road, Hastings.

The attack on that day claimed one other life, with 8 other wounded, 2 severely.

Albert Portsmouth, aged 40 was killed in his home at 42 Havelock Road.

The attack on that day claimed one other life, with 8 other wounded, 2 severely.

24 The Broadway, Ore, Hastings

On Sunday 3rd May 1942, at 9.05pm, four Messerschmitt 109s swept over the town and dropped high explosive bombs on across Hastings and Ore. Vicarage Road and Emmanuel Road, in Hastings and Barley Lane, Middle Road, The Broadway and Oakfield Road in Ore were all hit.

One of these bombs exploded on The Broadway, Ore causing extensive damage to several houses. At number 24 The Broadway twin sisters Caroline and Sarah Cox, aged 78, were killed in their home when it collapsed on them.

The attack on that day claimed two other lives, with 35 other wounded, 12 severely.

On Sunday 3rd May 1942, at 9.05pm, four Messerschmitt 109s swept over the town and dropped high explosive bombs on Vicarage Road and Emmanuel Road, Hastings and Barley Lane, Middle Road, The Broadway and Oakfield Road in Ore.

Mary Gamblen was killed when one of the bombs hit 50 Emmanuel Road. Her husband James Gamblen was badly wounded and died at the Municipal Hospital two days later.

The attack on that day claimed three other lives, with 35 other wounded, 12 severely.

On Sunday 3rd May 1942, at 9.05pm, four Messerschmitt 109s swept over the town and dropped high explosive bombs on Vicarage Road and Emmanuel Road, Hastings and Barley Lane, Middle Road, The Broadway and Oakfield Road in Ore.

Two year old Deidre Battersby was killed as she slept in her cot when one of the bombs hit The Emmanuel Vicarage in Vicarage Road. Her mother and sister were injured but survived. Her father, Reverend Jason Battersby, was away at the time.

The attack on that day claimed four other lives, with 35 other wounded, 12 severely.

Constance Ethel Torrance

Name: Constance Ethel Torrance

Died on: Sunday, 17th May 1942

Died at: 60 St George’s Road, Hastings

Additional Information: Constance Torrance, aged 28, was killed when four fighter bombers dropped HE bombs on Havelock Road, Middle Street and Falaise Road. Constance died at St George’s Road in an area not known to have been bombed, so she possibly might have been a victim of machine gun fire. One other person was killed in the raid with 10 others wounded, two seriously.

Constance, married to Jack Torrance, was the daughter of R Beale. She lived at 60 St Georges Road.

Name: Albert Arthur Portsmouth

Died on: Sunday, 17th May 1942

Died at: 42 Havelock Road, Hastings

Additional Information: Albert Portsmouth, aged 40, was killed when four fighter bombers dropped HE bombs on Havelock Road, Middle Street and Falaise Road. One other person was killed in the raid with 10 others wounded, two seriously.

Albert, married to Doris Irene Portsmouth, was the son of Albert and Emily Portsmouth. He lived at 42 Havelock Road.

I was unable to locate Albert’s grave marker in the main area of WW2 war graves, so he is likely buried else where on site. I will look to find it when I revisit Hastings Cemetery.

Sarah was the sister of Caroline Cox and lived at 24 The Broadway, Ore.

I was unable to locate Sarah’s grave marker in the main area of WW2 war graves, so she is likely buried else where on site. I will look to find it when I revisit Hastings Cemetery.

Additional Information: James Gamblen, aged 83, was wounded when four ME 109’s strafed and bombed Emmanuel Vicarage, Vicarage Road, Emmanuel Road, Barley Lane, Middle Road, The Broadway and Oakfield Road. He died on 5th May at the Municipal Hospital, Hastings. Four others were killed in the raid, with 35 others injured, 12 seriously.

James was the husband of Mary Gamblen and lived at 50 Emmanuel Road, Hastings.

I was unable to locate James’s grave marker in the main area of WW2 war graves, so he is likely buried else where on site. I will look to find it when I revisit Hastings Cemetery.
