7 Moscow Road, Ore, Hastings

During the morning of Tuesday 9th February 1943 two German bombers dropped several 2,000lb bombs and 14 high explosive bombs across Hastings and St Leonards. They also sprayed machine gun fire as they flew across the town. Bomb damage was caused to buildings at St John’s Church, Upper St Leonards, Cumberland Gardens, Ashbrook Road, Christ Church, Ore, Moscow Road and Alfred Road.

Three people were killed at Moscow Road. Ethel Fowler, who lived at 7 Moscow Road, was badly wounded by bullets and died the next day at the Municipal Hospital. Her neighbours,  Sarah Martin aged 64 and Mrs Martin’s granddaughter Ann Watson, aged 4, were killed by flying debris caused by a bomb explosion.

Other Info: Charles died aged 28 on 23rd March 1943. He is remembered at Enfidaville War Cemetery in Tunisia, grave reference VII. C. 10. The inscription on his grave is ‘We shall never forget you, in our hearts you are near. Loved and sadly missed. Dad and Family.’

24 The Broadway, Ore, Hastings

On Sunday 3rd May 1942, at 9.05pm, four Messerschmitt 109s swept over the town and dropped high explosive bombs on across Hastings and Ore. Vicarage Road and Emmanuel Road, in Hastings and Barley Lane, Middle Road, The Broadway and Oakfield Road in Ore were all hit.

One of these bombs exploded on The Broadway, Ore causing extensive damage to several houses. At number 24 The Broadway twin sisters Caroline and Sarah Cox, aged 78, were killed in their home when it collapsed on them.

The attack on that day claimed two other lives, with 35 other wounded, 12 severely.

On Thursday September 12th 150 incendiary bombs and 15 high explosive bombs were dropped on Clive Vale, Ore. Edmund Road and Alfred Road were hit particularly badly. Jane Bumstead and William Dowding were killed when their home was destroyed in the attack. many other houses in Edmund Road were so badly damaged they had to be demolished.

Additional Information: David Starkey died aged 22 on 29th June 1947. The inscription on his grave reads “Free from sorrow, free from pain, your pleasant smile we will see again.”

Died on: Sunday, 3rd May 1942

Died at: 24 The Broadway, Middle Road, Ore

Additional Information: Sarah Cox, aged 78, was killed when four ME 109’s strafed and bombed Emmanuel Vicarage, Vicarage Road, Emmanuel Road, Barley Lane, Middle Road, The Broadway and Oakfield Road. Four others were killed in the raid, with 35 others injured, 12 seriously.

Sarah was the sister of Caroline Cox and lived at 24 The Broadway, Ore.

I was unable to locate Sarah’s grave marker in the main area of WW2 war graves, so she is likely buried else where on site. I will look to find it when I revisit Hastings Cemetery.
